Types of Anesthesia

We offer several forms of anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

Local Anesthesia

This involves numbing medication applied directly to the surgical area, ensuring you feel no pain during the procedure while remaining awake and alert.

Nitrous Oxide

Known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a conscious sedation method that promotes calmness and relaxation. Administered through a mask, it offers mild pain relief and a sense of tranquility.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Also called twilight sedation, IV sedation involves medications given intravenously to induce a semi-conscious state during surgery. This sedation type eliminates pain and often leaves no memory of the procedure.

General Anesthesia

Used for extensive procedures, general anesthesia renders patients completely unconscious and is typically administered in surgery centers or hospitals.

Pediatric Anesthesia

Specialized pediatric anesthesia delivered with the highest level of safety, training, and oversight at every step of the way.

About Sedation Dentistry

For those who feel anxious or fearful about dental visits, sedation dentistry can be an ideal solution. At Inland Institute Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, our team strives to provide a comfortable, stress-free experience for Upland, CA patients. Sedation dentistry allows you to receive necessary dental care without anxiety.

Sedation dentistry, or sleep dentistry, uses various levels of sedation to help patients relax during dental procedures. This approach benefits patients of all ages, allowing them to undergo necessary treatments without fear or discomfort.

Dr. Gilbert will evaluate your needs to determine the appropriate level of sedation for your procedure. Sedation levels range from mild to deep, chosen based on the procedure's complexity and your anxiety level.

It is crucial that sedation dentistry is administered only by qualified healthcare professionals, like a board-certified oral surgeon like Dr. Gilbert. Our doctors have undergone extensive training in anesthesia administration and patient monitoring to ensure your safety and comfort.

Pediatric Anesthesia

You may have heard of Caleb’s Law (Glazer Law SB 501, Section 1682), which went into effect on January 1, 2022. This legislation was created to enhance the safety of pediatric patients undergoing anesthesia during dental procedures.

What This Means for Your Child

In summary, the law emphasizes:

  • The need for a separate, qualified anesthesia provider to be present during procedures for pediatric patients (under 13 years old)
  • A second provider trained in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS) to administer anesthesia and monitor the patient through recovery
  • A continued focus on patient safety during all stages of care

Additionally, in California, anesthesia providers must:

  • Complete pediatric anesthesia credentialing
  • Hold a Pediatric Anesthesia Endorsement
  • Maintain a General Anesthesia Permit issued by the State of California

Our Commitment to Safety

At Inland Institute, we have followed this elevated standard of pediatric care for over 20 years by working with board-certified anesthesiologists.

Our AAAHC-accredited surgery center is specifically designed to meet—and exceed—these requirements, ensuring the highest level of safety and care for your child.

“When it comes to your child, safety isn’t an upgrade—it’s the standard.”

Children require specialized attention, and our team is dedicated to providing a safe, comfortable, and closely monitored experience at every stage of treatment.

Am I a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is ideal for both children and adults who experience dental fears, phobias, sensitivity, a strong gag reflex, restlessness, or have had traumatic experiences in the past. It is particularly beneficial for longer procedures or those who have delayed treatment due to fear of surgery or pain.

Can Oral Surgeons Perform Anesthesia?

As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Gilbert has the training and qualifications to administer all forms of anesthesia. He has completed extensive education and hands-on training in a residency program after dental school, preparing him to safely administer anesthesia and monitor patients throughout surgical procedures.
